- Description: Lucy Ives reviews the Krasner-Pollock show at The Met, the L train burlesque arrives in Manhattan, photos from the student protests in France, and an interview with outgoing Yaddo President Elaina Richardson.

You try to get the latest news about the inspiring student protests in France but a snarky reporter on the *New York Times* podcast tells you that the country’s problem is providing “too generous” pension plans and parental leaves.

These welfare benefits saddle the country with debt, he says, scolding the government for not making France more competitive in the marketplace.

You turn off the podcast because you can’t listen to any more of this evil idiocy.

You finally finish reading a much-hyped new novel and wonder why you made yourself go through such torture. You return to Marcel Proust’s *In Search of Lost Time* to cleanse your mind’s palette. “When one is in love one has no love left for anyone.”

You go to a gala dinner and remind yourself of the golden rule at these events: always go with the steak because you never know with chicken. You feel snazzy in your new tuxedo and remember that the last time you wore one was during the Arab Spring.

You meet with Algerian-French artist Kader Attia in a Tunisian restaurant in Manhattan for an interview about a show he’s curating in India. His face full of wisdom and passion, he encourages you to wear your wounds on your sleeve.

In the cold morning breeze, you see two doves perching on the wing of an eagle sculpture on a tall column. You think about how all good art has some connection to music, and how houses always look good when they’re painted green. Nina Simone sings “Tomorrow will be the 22nd century” in your ears. Meanwhile, generation 6-7 is remaking May 68.

[ The Met’s Krasner and Pollock Show Is a Breathtaking Upending ](https://hyperallergic.com/the-mets-krasner-and-pollock-show-is-a-breathtaking-upending/)

I was married to an artist once. It was not a good experience, although calling it “an experience” makes it sound like a unified, parsable thing, and it wasn’t that, either. We’re all adults here, is what I’m getting at — so no one should imagine that anyone has bulletproof insight into anyone else’s romantic relationship, much less their own.

Certainly, once a relationship is over, it becomes a moving target in permanence: the good, the bad, and the ugly all trading places, each a microcosm in which various genres of chaos and ecstasy hold sway. And whatever we may think of other people’s marriages, we must take care. What we believe we know is almost always something we meant to say about ourselves. The phone call is coming from inside the building. If you see something, well, see something. | Lucy Ives
