With the [*Medieval Fantasy City Generator*](https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator?ref=hyperallergic.com), you can generate endless maps of walled cities, complete with castles and winding waterways. The free online generator, developed by [Oleg Dolya](https://twitter.com/watawatabou?ref=hyperallergic.com), allows for layouts like “citadel” and “plaza,” with options for city size, whether small, medium, or large.

The *Medieval Fantasy City Generator*, recently shared by [Boing Boing](https://boingboing.net/2017/11/20/medieval-city-plan-generator.html?ref=hyperallergic.com), has been available in [Itch.io](https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator?ref=hyperallergic.com) for a few months. It continues to be updated with new features, such as [rivers](https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator/devlog/11802/050-rivers-and-basic-house-shapes?ref=hyperallergic.com), [house shapes](https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator/devlog/11802/050-rivers-and-basic-house-shapes?ref=hyperallergic.com), [shanty towns](https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator/devlog/7063/042-shanty-towns-and-more-options?ref=hyperallergic.com), [outskirts](https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator/devlog/3091/030-wall-less-layouts-city-outskirts-smooth-roads?ref=hyperallergic.com), [wall-less layouts](https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator/devlog/3091/030-wall-less-layouts-city-outskirts-smooth-roads?ref=hyperallergic.com), and [coastal cities. ](https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator/devlog/4923/040-coastal-cities?ref=hyperallergic.com)Users can hover their mouse over different sections of the cities to see labels pop up for farms, gates, wards, and slums. The newest addition — [Toy Town](https://watabou.itch.io/toy-town?ref=hyperallergic.com) — is a 3D visualizer that involves a street-level view of the cities.

It’s similar to projects like [Uncharted Atlas](https://twitter.com/unchartedatlas?ref=hyperallergic.com), a Twitter bot that generates fantasy maps, or the [Fantasy World Generator](https://donjon.bin.sh/fantasy/world/?ref=hyperallergic.com). Dolya [notes](https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator?ref=hyperallergic.com) on the generator’s site that it was created for a [monthly challenge](https://www.reddit.com/r/proceduralgeneration/comments/695oxj/monthly%5Fchallenge%5F17%5Fapril%5F2017%5Fprocedural/?ref=hyperallergic.com) on the [procedural generation](https://www.reddit.com/r/proceduralgeneration/?ref=hyperallergic.com) subreddit. The developer [adds](https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator?ref=hyperallergic.com) that “the goal is to produce a nice looking map, not an accurate model of a city.”

Perhaps you could make your own [*Carcassonne*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcassonne%5F%28board%5Fgame%29?ref=hyperallergic.com)\-syle board game with it, or employ a map as a guide for a text-based RPG on a plague outbreak? Maybe pen some *Ivanhoe* fan fiction, or use a map to set up a *Dungeons & Dragons* adventure? Or you could just watch the mesmerizing arrangements of streets and walls as you augment the city structures like a digital god.
