Meg Onli, an organizer behind some of the Whitney Museum of American Art's signature exhibitions, and Zack Winokur, a performing arts director and co-founder, are the co-curators for the 2028 Whitney Biennial, the museum announced today, November 6\.

“Meg is one of the most compelling curatorial voices working today, with an extraordinary ability to champion artists and bring fresh perspectives to the history of American art," Scott Rothkopf, director of the Whitney, said in a statement. "Zack is an equally inventive artistic programmer who has become one of the leading voices of his generation through groundbreaking work across opera, theater, dance, and the visual arts. Their partnership promises a radical new vision for the 2028 Biennial."

The news comes just two months after the [2026 Biennial](https://hyperallergic.com/the-whitney-biennial-is-for-the-faint-hearted/) closed and a month after unionized staff at the museum dodged a [full-blown strike](https://hyperallergic.com/whitney-museum-union-sets-strike-date-ahead-of-major-roy-lichtenstein-show/) ahead of *Roy Lichtenstein: Like New*, a blockbuster retrospective co-curated by Onli. The Whitney union was [one of four New York City museum unions](https://hyperallergic.com/staff-at-whitney-museum-brooklyn-museum-and-american-folk-art-museum-authorize-strike/) under United Auto Workers 2110 — along with the Brooklyn Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum — that voted to strike amid drawn-out contract negotiations over low compensation, benefits, and workplace conditions. Hours before the planned strike, unionized staffers ratified their second contract and secured a new wage floor, increased parental and bereavement leave, and stronger safety provisions, among other amendments.

First joining the museum as curator-at-large in 2023, Onli co-curated the [2024 Whitney Biennial](https://hyperallergic.com/first-impressions-from-the-2024-whitney-biennial/), *Even Better Than the Real Thing*, with Chrissie Iles. That same year, Onli was [promoted](https://whitneymedia.org/assets/generic%5Ffile/4107/Meg%5FOnli%5F-%5FNancy%5Fand%5FFred%5FPoses%5FCurator%5F-%5FPress%5FRelease.pdf?ref=hyperallergic.com) to Nancy and Fred Poses Curator to lead the Whitney’s painting and sculpture acquisition committee, bringing her previous experience as director and curator of the Underground Museum in Los Angeles and associate curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania.

“From the Whitney’s early Annuals to its many subsequent iterations, the Biennial has a rich history of reinvention that is already giving us much to think about," Onli said in a statement. "I couldn’t be more excited to explore what the Biennial can be alongside Zack, who is such a dynamic thinker, and to see where our conversations with artists lead."

[Winokur](https://www.zackwinokur.com/about?ref=hyperallergic.com) is the co-founder of the American Modern Opera Company, an interdisciplinary collective comprised of 17 singers, musicians, dancers, and other performing artists. He also served as artistic director for Little Island on Pier 55 and NYPopsUp, a statewide initiative aimed at opening performing arts spaces after COVID-19\.

“I’m honored to be curating the Whitney Biennial with Meg,” Winokur added in a statement. “Our shared desire to center objects and people and the collision between them already echoes our collaboration. It’s that energy that makes the dialogue with her so fun and inspiring."

Dating back to 1932, the Whitney Biennial remains the longest-running survey of American art, with more than 3,600 artists participating in the exhibition to date. The 83rd edition is slated to open in March 2028\.
