# Mel Chin Submerges Times Square in a Post-Apocalyptic Future

On Wednesday, conceptual visual artist [Mel Chin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel%5FChin?ref=hyperallergic.com) takes over Times Square as part of his multi-location Queens Museum exhibition, [*Mel Chin: All Over the Place*](http://www.queensmuseum.org/2017/11/mel-chin-2?ref=hyperallergic.com). The two works that will be unveiled are “Wake,” a giant animatronic sculpture, and “Unmoored,” a mixed-reality experience, and they’re both sure to draw crowds.

“Wake” is meant to look like the ribs of a whale or a shipwreck in the sea, and visitors can move through the work, where they will encounter a 24-foot-tall figure of a woman, modeled after 19th-century opera singer [Jenny Lind](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenny%5FLind?ref=hyperallergic.com). According to the Queens Museum, the sculpture “calls forth both the city’s triumphs and the complicated layers of its past.” Chin’s second Times Square art piece, “Unmoored,” allows visitors to see an underwater Times Square through a mixed-reality future in which “global warming has gone unchecked.” This sounds like something you won’t want to miss.
