While his official cause of death has been identified as a [cerebral stroke](https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2025-04/pope-francis-death-due-to-stroke-and-irreversible-cardiocircula.html?ref=hyperallergic.com), millions of social media users have pinned the blame on United States Vice President [JD Vance, who briefly met with the Pope](https://apnews.com/article/pope-vance-us-migration-c9fc577cabff138de7bd8026133994fc?ref=hyperallergic.com) on Easter Sunday, less than 24 hours before he passed. Other memes argue that despite his ailments, Pope Francis held on long enough just to tell Vance what a horrible Catholic he was ... Either way, it's an increasingly bad look for the US's already withered reputation worldwide.
