# The Art World, #MeToo, and What Remains to be Done

Over the past several months, a tidal wave of outrage and protest over workplace sexual assault, harassment, and gender inequality has been steadily swelling, accompanied by the hashtags #[TimesUp](https://www.timesupnow.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com) and #[MeToo](https://twitter.com/search?q=%23METOO&ref=hyperallergic.com). What began in Hollywood with studio head [Harvey Weinstein](http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-41594672?ref=hyperallergic.com) and a staggering [gender pay gap](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2018/01/hollywood-wage-gap-times-up?ref=hyperallergic.com), has rapidly spread across other industries like media and politics. The dominoes are starting to fall in the art world as well, with a few high-profile individuals like former *Artforum* publisher [Knight Landesman](https://hyperallergic.com/notsurprised-demands-artforum-boycott/) and artist [Chuck Close](https://hyperallergic.com/national-gallery-art-postpones-chuck-close-thomas-roma/) coming under fire for their alleged abusive behavior.

Although women make up [over 50% of Arts & Humanities graduates](https://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2011/09/female-graduation-rates?ref=hyperallergic.com), and comprise 51% of visual artists in the US, they are [woefully underrepresented](https://nmwa.org/advocate/get-facts?ref=hyperallergic.com) on museum walls and in positions as curators and museum directors. It is no surprise then that female artists ranked #5 on [Hyperallergic’s 2017 list of the most powerless people in the art world](https://hyperallergic.com/419267/powerless-list-2017/). In response to this condition, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) will [host a conversation](http://welcometolace.org/event/the-metoo-age-power-gender-equity-in-the-art-world/?ref=hyperallergic.com) to explore what role the #MeToo movement can play in empowering women in the arts. Panelists include [Hyperallergic co-founder and editor-in-chief Hrag Vartanian](https://hragvartanian.com/about/?ref=hyperallergic.com); curator and writer [Yasmeen Siddiqui](http://minervaprojects.org/about-minerva/?ref=hyperallergic.com), founding director of Minerva Projects; art historian, critic, and curator [Alpesh Kantilal Patel](https://hyperallergic.com/author/alpesh-patel/); artist [Zoe Charlton](https://www.zoecharlton.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com); artist [Tim Doud](https://www.timdoud.net/?ref=hyperallergic.com); and [Courtney Fink](http://www.courtneyfink.org/bio/?ref=hyperallergic.com), co-founder and executive director of [Common Field.](https://www.commonfield.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com) The conversation will be moderated by artist and educator [Sharon Louden](https://www.sharonlouden.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com). To start things off, there will also be a performance from Future Clown, the alter ego of artist [Rachel Mason](http://www.rachelannmason.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), who [lip-synced the 45th president’s 2017 inaugural address](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-nK8AMi-9Q&ref=hyperallergic.com) in a live-stream from LACE last year.
