# A MoMA Series Explores the “Dark Corners of the Female Experience” Through Indie Films

Beginning this Thursday, the [Museum of Modern Art](https://www.moma.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com) will host [*The Future of Film is Female*](http://press.moma.org/wp-content/files%5Fmf/futureoffilmisfemale%5Frelease%5Ffinal.pdf?ref=hyperallergic.com), a new seasonal series promoting contemporary films directed by women in the early stages of their careers. The series will run from July 26 through August 2 and will feature films like [Shirin Neshat’s](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirin%5FNeshat?ref=hyperallergic.com) [*Looking for Oum Kulthum*](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6281148/?ref=hyperallergic.com) — the story of an exiled Iranian woman artist and filmmaker making a film about the famed Egyptian singer — as well as films by [Gillian Robespierre](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gillian%5FRobespierre?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Maysaloun Hamoud](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maysaloun%5FHamoud?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Coralie Fargeat](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0267287/?ref=hyperallergic.com), and [Erin Lee Carr](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erin%5FLee%5FCarr?ref=hyperallergic.com). There will also be short films “[that explore dark corners of the female experience](http://press.moma.org/wp-content/files%5Fmf/futureoffilmisfemale%5Frelease%5Ffinal.pdf?ref=hyperallergic.com),” according to the MoMA’s website.

Each film in this series was produced with limited resources and no major industry connections in order to provide a platform to early-career women filmmakers, placing them “[on equal footing with their male counterparts](http://press.moma.org/wp-content/files%5Fmf/futureoffilmisfemale%5Frelease%5Ffinal.pdf?ref=hyperallergic.com).” This is a series you won’t want to miss, with the first film, *Looking for Oum Kulthum*, screening on Thursday at 7:00 pm, followed by a discussion with the filmmakers.
