# Perform the Movements of a Santa Monica Neighborhood

As a Kenyan-Indian Canadian living in the US, artist and dancer [Brendan Fernandes](http://www.brendanfernandes.ca/?ref=hyperallergic.com) draws on his composite identity to challenge received ideas about authenticity and hybridity. Fernandes — whose work takes the form of video, object making, installation, and performance — is currently [in residence](http://18thstreet.org/artists/brendan-fernandes-2/?ref=hyperallergic.com) at 18th Street Arts Center; as part of that, he’ll stage three participatory public actions titled “[I’m Down](http://18thstreet.org/brendan-fernandes-im-down/?ref=hyperallergic.com),” the first of which takes place this Saturday, March 18\. The performances will explore the cultural history, architecture, and patterns of displacement of the community around 18th Street — known as the Pico neighborhood — through movement and language. Participants will “workshop” the “gestural vocabulary” Fernandes has created alongside local residents.
