# A Project Gives Artists an Outlet to Scream

From Edvard Munch’s [iconic 1893 painting](https://www.edvardmunch.org/the-scream.jsp?ref=hyperallergic.com) to [Vito Acconci’](https://hyperallergic.com/375708/vito-acconci-the-audacious-artist-and-experimental-architect-dies-at-77/)s 1971 performance piece “[Sound Barrier](https://www.artsy.net/artwork/vito-acconci-sound-barrier?ref=hyperallergic.com),” in which he aggressively tried to muffle the screams of a collaborator, the scream has been an existential inspiration for countless artists. This weekend, the arts organization [Navel](https://navel.la/?ref=hyperallergic.com) will host a range of artists, musicians, and performers who will present their own interpretations in [Project Scream](https://navel.la/events/project-scream/?ref=hyperallergic.com), a 2018–19 sound project from [the Center for Integrated Media](https://centerforintegratedmedia.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com) at CalArts and the curatorial initiative viralnet-v4.net. The event is curated by Fy and Tom Leeser — Program Administrator and Director of the Center for Integrated Media respectively — and experimental vocalist [Carmina Escobar](https://carminaescobar.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com).

More than simply a response to contemporary political and social anxieties, the organizers were inspired by the Buddhist notion of the scream as a transformative act to achieve enlightenment and compassion. Participants include sound artist and opera singer [Micaela Tobin](http://www.micaelatobin.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), curator and writer [Ana Iwataki](http://anaiwataki.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), Erin Demastes, whose work straddles art and science, and several others.
