# Pussy Rioters Nominated for Art Award in Singapore (of All Places)

Ever since their [release from prison](http://hyperallergic.com/99893/pussy-riot-members-go-free/), Pussy Riot members Maria Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova have received a lot of [fawning](http://lightbox.time.com/2014/01/09/pussy-riots-next-act-exclusive-photos-of-life-after-prison/?ref=hyperallergic.com) — and sometimes [weird](http://www.buzzfeed.com/miriamelder/12-ridiculous-moments-from-pussy-riots-first-tv-interview?ref=hyperallergic.com) — [press](http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/spiegel-interview-with-pussy-riot-member-nadezhda-tolokonnikova-a-941135.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) and [attention](http://www.theartnewspaper.com/articles/Tea-and-sympathy-with-Pussy-Riot/31566?ref=hyperallergic.com). But the latest Pussy Riot story, from [Bloomberg News](http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-01-17/pussy-riot-to-use-art-to-promote-better-prison-conditions.html?ref=hyperallergic.com), reaches new levels of sigh-inducing absurdity.

The group has been shortlisted in the digital/video category of the Prudential Eye Awards, for “Punk Prayer,” the [video](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9zgPkaxfps&ref=hyperallergic.com) that led to their [sentencing](http://hyperallergic.com/55686/pussy-riot-is-sentenced-to-2-years-in-prison-for-hooliganism/) and imprisonment on charges of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.” The [awards](http://prudentialeyeawards.com/about?ref=hyperallergic.com) are part of the Global Eye Programme, which is a partnership between Parallel Contemporary Art and the Saatchi Gallery that’s backed by the [British Council](https://www.britishcouncil.org.sg/en/about-us?ref=hyperallergic.com). Meant to offer — in typical artspeak — a “global platform” for emerging Asian artists, the program takes place in … Singapore! A country whose government has a *great* [track record](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human%5Frights%5Fin%5FSingapore?ref=hyperallergic.com) on human rights and civil liberties.

Now, I’m sure the judges for the awards thought they were doing something nice — heroic, even — by nominating Pussy Riot for the award, but the whole thing smacks of classic art world co-optation. And, just in case you were wondering, “The winner of the $20,000 prizes will be announced on Jan. 18 at a black-tie dinner in Singapore.” (Just wait for the Alekhina and Tolokonnikova photos, if they win.)

There’s also the fact that all of this is presented on Bloomberg without mention of any conflicts or discrepancies — which in this case basically means *context*:
