Starting in February, it appeared [certain](https://hyperallergic.com/seaport-museum-staff/) that Bowne & Co. Stationers would close forever. After they shuttered the doors, the silence on the issue was deafening until in May there were stirrings that something new was in the air as [activists](https://hyperallergic.com/save-bowne-studio/) and the [Seaport Museum](https://hyperallergic.com/seaport-museum-board/) showed signs of new energy.

Then last month the first signs of good things to come appeared when Friends of Bowne [released a strategic plan](http://friendsofbowne.wordpress.com/2011/08/29/bowne-at-greater-risk/?ref=hyperallergic.com) outlining how the shop could reopen and cover its expenses. This month, the Seaport Museum [received a $2 million dollar grant](https://hyperallergic.com/struggling-seaport-museum-gets-2m-grant/) from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and now DNAinfo is [reporting](http://www.dnainfo.com/20110921/downtown/seaport-museums-19thcentury-print-shop-will-reopen-advocates-say?ref=hyperallergic.com) more positive news for lovers of 19th C. design and letterpress printing:
