# Shahidul Alam Arrives in New York to Share His Journey

This Thursday, Bangladeshi photographer, writer, human rights activist, and *Time* magazine 2018 person of the year Shahidul Alam will be at the International Center of Photography (ICP) to share his work and journey. He will discuss his successes and failures, taking the audience through the steps he’s taken as an activist.

Although Alam received his PhD in chemistry from London University, he soon after took up photography, and in 1984 traveled to Bangladesh to campaign to remove autocratic general Hussain Muhammad Ershad from office. During that time, he also created Drik Picture Library, Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, and Chobi Mela international photography festival. He was [recently held in custody by the Bangladeshi government](https://hyperallergic.com/471489/bangladeshi-photojournalist-shahidul-alam-granted-bail-after-102-days-in-detention/) for 102 days for posting “imaginary propaganda against the government” on his Facebook profile, causing “panic among public and caused deterioration of law and order.” He was granted bail on November 15.
