Founded in 1980, [the Association of Professional Art Advisors](http://www.artadvisors.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com) (APAA) is an international organization of independent art advisors and corporate art curators that sets the standards for ethical practice in the field. APAA members stress personal integrity, connoisseurship and promote the value of the visual arts. Members must have at least five years experience working as an advisor, work objectively on behalf of their clients and do not maintain an inventory of artwork for sale.

An art advisor provides professional guidance to the collector on the acquisition, installation and maintenance of works of art, including: supporting the collector’s vision arranging tours, lectures, and other art-related educational opportunities providing access to museums, galleries, and artists’ studios working with architects, designers and other related professionals.
