[The Avant/Garde Diaries](http://engine.nectarads.com/redirect/0/8794/9727/0/2ea185ff80df433f854a9aeeb1d73c47/0/0/0/0?ref=hyperallergic.com) is a digital portrait magazine that invites leading creatives to talk about the cutting edge of art, design, fashion, music and film.

In each digital portrait, featured diarists are asked to introduce someone or something they consider to be ahead of their time. The result is a collection of very personal snapshots that celebrate new ways of thinking and spread inspiration.

In this video, American dealer/museum director [Jeffrey Deitch](http://engine.nectarads.com/redirect/0/8798/9727/0/9f14459d6a374780b602c132329abc42/0/0/0/0?ref=hyperallergic.com) talks about the art world of the 1970s, which he mentions was only a few thousand at the time, and chooses urban planner/sculptor Theaster Gates, who works outside the museum to help invigorate poor communities and derelict spaces. Gates is an inspiration to those who dream outside the white box.
