Under normal circumstances, the awards ceremony for last year's films would have been held by now, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the Academy's timetable. In an unprecedented move, films that went to VOD without playing in theaters were eligible for consideration, and the release window for competition was extended beyond 2020 proper, through February of this year.
