The last time I spoke with Micol Hebron, earlier this year, she was spearheading Gallery Tally, a project for which she and a small army of volunteers count the numbers of men and women artists on the rosters of art galleries. A week and a half ago, Hebron was in Miami for the art fairs, so she took the opportunity to do some more counting.

Miami’s Margulies Collection Is Predictable but Idiosyncratic
MIAMI — The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse (foundered and operated by collector Martin Z. Margulies) is located in a 45,000-square-foot building that butts up against a highway and sits just across the street from a discount clothing store in Wynwood, the city’s graffiti-splattered hipster enclave.
A Casual Approach at Aqua Art Miami
MIAMI BEACH — This was the 10th year of Aqua Art Miami, which transforms the Aqua Hotel in Miami Beach into a boutique-like art fair. The fair overtook the first and second floors of the building, with art-filled rooms surrounding a small courtyard where visitors broke to dip their feet in the hot tub and sip $13 cocktails.
Oddball Art Theft Stunt Provides a Link at Ink Miami Fair
MIAMI BEACH — Ink Miami Art Fair, a salon-style fair within the Dorchester Hotel, opened its ninth edition on Wednesday, December 3. Exhibitors were housed in hotel suites, the “booth” a temporarily reclaimed room. The fair, as always, focused on works on paper, but strayed to include the occasional sculpture or drawing produced from cut-out steel.
Safety First at Design Miami
MIAMI BEACH — In its tenth year, Design Miami again enjoyed a prime location across the street from the center of the Miami universe, Art Basel Miami Beach.
Women Artists Dominate in Art Basel Miami Beach’s Sculpture Park
MIAMI BEACH — Amid all the predictable fare in Art Basel Miami Beach’s Public sector, installed in Collins Park alongside the Bass Museum of Art — your Ernesto Neto hammock contraption, your Justin Matherly concrete-and-walker figure, your shiny bronze Elmgreen & Dragset provocation, your Georg Baselitz primitivist giant — is a set of bravura works by women artists.
In a Former Auto Body Shop in Miami, Video and Performance Art by Women
MIAMI BEACH — Just a 15-minute walk down the road from this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach is an exhilarating exhibition of work by 33 female artists. Acting as a foil to the painting and sculpture that dominate the fair(s), the show features only videos and performances, many of which focus on the body.
Not for Sale: Outside the Convention Center in Miami
MIAMI BEACH — “There’s a lot of product going on here,” I heard a woman say into her cell phone at the mega-art fair Art Basel Miami Beach 2014. Indeed, $3 billion worth of art is being offered for sale this year, according to the event’s organizers.
Hundreds Take to the Streets to Seek Justice for Artist Killed by Miami Police
MIAMI — This evening, amid the well-kept art fairs and glitzy parties of Miami Art Week, some 300 people — possibly as many as 600, according to some reports — descended on the Miami neighborhood of Wynwood to protest police brutality and the death of artist Israel “Reefa” Hernandez.
NADA Miami Beach Keeps It Casual
MIAMI BEACH — Upon entering this year’s New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) art fair one immediately appreciates the need for this alternative to the larger, establishment art fair down the beach. Unlike Art Basel, NADA Miami Beach has a casual, approachable feel.
Art Basel Miami Beach Sobers Up
MIAMI BEACH — Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB) opened its doors to the public on Thursday for its 13th edition. While many of the works on view deal with political themes, the overall aesthetic of the show is decidedly restrained compared to years past.
Dancing at the Speed of the Internet
MIAMI BEACH — There’s the whiff of grand ambition in MEEM 4 MIAMI, which is artist Ryan McNamara’s new version of his award-winning commission for the Performa 13 performance art biennial.
