There are more than 20 fairs in Miami this week, on top of the rich offerings at the city’s museums and private collections. Here’s a handy way to make sense of it all.
MIAMI — Since Art Basel’s Miami Beach fair set down its roots over a decade ago, Miami Art Week has become a cacophony of satellite fairs and events jam-packing the international art circuit’s calendar for the first week of December.
You have limited time, but you need to know where to go. Don’t worry, we got you covered. Here’s our take on what to expect.
With the mercury dropping in the art world power centers of old, it’s time for the annual migration to Miami for Art Basel Miami Beach, its ever-expanding roster of satellite fairs and pop-up exhibitions, and the impossible schedule of parties and performances all week long (December 1–7, 2014).
MIAMI — One of the good things about the glut of art at fairs is the chance to make unexpected visual connections — to watch sparks fly between artworks you’d never otherwise see together. At the sprawling Art Miami fair, I was pleasantly surprised by some of the associations and affinities that jumped out at me from among the aisles.
I’m finding it a little hard to feel upset at the Banksy “exhibition” that was on display in Art Miami and its sister fair Context this past week. Others have found reasons to boycott the affair, and Marc and Sara Schiller, two street art aficionados I respect, wrote on Wooster Collective that they are calling out the Miami Art Fair for letting all this happen: “Knowing that Banksy has condemned the show, they could have easily rejected the exhibition and not legitimized the stolen artwork. But they didn’t. And this tells you a lot about what their motivations are.”
Now in its 23rd year as the anchor art fair for the city of Miami, Art Miami, the premiere international contemporary and modern art fair, continues to respond to the interests of serious collectors and this year will debut CONTEXT Art Miami, its new sister art fair featuring emerging and cutting edge artists.
While Art Miami will continue to present the most important contemporary and modern artworks from over 125 of the world’s most prominent art galleries, its inaugural sister fair, CONTEXT Art Miami, will highlight works by emerging and mid-career cutting-edge artists from 65 hand-selected galleries.
