I didn’t expect to say this, but Independent Projects is a lovely fair. Started by the creators of the Independent, Armory Week’s alterna-fair, and taking place in the same location, the former Dia Art Foundation building on West 22nd Street in Chelsea, Independent Projects simultaneously builds on and slims down its sister fair’s model.
The most galvanizing room, hands down, in the current Whitney Biennial is the Forrest Bess micro-retrospective put together by sculptor Robert Gober. And on Tuesday, in what could be a trend, another museum-quality exhibition opened, organized by another sculptor — Matthew Day Jackson’s “Science on the back end” at Hauser & Wirth.
I’ve already expressed my affection for apartment shows but hallway — or landing, to be more precise — shows I’ve been mum about … until now. This past weekend curator Martin Esteves pulled off a smart, small pop-up exhibition on a friend’s landing on Dupont Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
