# An Art Festival Inspired by 100 Films About Los Angeles

Tasked with forging artistic connections between France and Southern California, [FLAX](https://flaxfoundation.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com) (France Los Angeles Exchange) Foundation will launch one of its most ambitious projects to date, [*The Dialectic of the Stars*](https://flaxfoundation.org/initiative/the-dialectic-of-the-stars/?ref=hyperallergic.com). Organized by curator-in-residence Fabien Danesi, the two-week performance, video, and music festival features 19 artists and collectives from France and the US.

To prepare for his residency, Danesi [watched over 100 films about LA](https://flaxfoundation.org/the-dialectic-of-the-stars-la/?ref=hyperallergic.com), and the festival reflects a complex vision of the city that encompasses both its manufactured and sincere qualities — its image-based fantasy, as well as its geographic and social reality. *The* *Dialectic* will take place at five distinctive venues throughout the city: [the Sowden House](https://sowdenhouse.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), [LACE](http://welcometolace.org/event/the-dialectic-of-the-stars-wrong-ped-xing/?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Zebulon](http://zebulon.la/?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Ford Theatres](https://www.fordtheatres.org/calendar/dialectic-stars-drag-me-crazy?ref=hyperallergic.com), and [LA Dance Project](http://ladanceproject.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com), with each night’s program tailored to the site. Notable events include a screening of [*Teherangeles*](http://www.hfcollection.org/tehran-geles-by-arash-nassiri-at-the-masafat-festival/?ref=hyperallergic.com) by Arash Nassiri, Fouad Bouchoucha’s motorcycle concert, and a collaborative dance piece from Rafaela Lopez, as well as performances from Geneva Skeen, Lucky Dragons, Emily Mast, and others. In addition, Paris-based artist Nicolas Momein will create a mobile sculpture, which will change with each venue it is presented at. All events are free, but some require advanced registration due to limited space.
