For decades, artists have been drawn to the High Desert east of Los Angeles for its ample space, limited distractions, and sparse population. This creative oasis offers a respite from the pressures and constraints of urban living, with the city only a few hours’ drive away. Projects ranging from [Noah Purifoy’s Open Air Museum](http://www.noahpurifoy.com/joshua-tree-outdoor-museum/?ref=hyperallergic.com) to [Andrea Zittel’s AZ West](http://www.zittel.org/work/a-z-west?ref=hyperallergic.com) and the new [Desert X biennial](https://www.desertx.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com) have established the region as an alternative artistic mecca.

The latest addition to the area is [the Magic Hour](http://themagichour.site/?ref=hyperallergic.com), a minimalist, modular structure produced in collaboration with event planning and design firm [Dyson & Womack](http://www.dysonwomack.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), which will hold artworks in the open air, framed by the landscape. Founded by artists [Ben Tong](http://www.benjamintong.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com) and [Alice Wang](http://llllllllllllllllllllll.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), it will be an experimental platform for a series of six-week, site-specific exhibitions beginning this Saturday. Simply titled [*No. 1*](http://themagichour.site/no-01-devito-fernandez-larsmon-lutker-rara/?ref=hyperallergic.com), the first exhibition features [Patricia Fernández](http://www.patriciafernandez.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Anne Guro Larsmon](http://www.anneguro.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Shana Lutker](http://shanalutker.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Sarah Rara](http://www.sarahrara.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), and [Gracie Devito](http://graciedevito.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), whose [raining cloud sculpture](http://graciedevito.com/Das-Cloud?ref=hyperallergic.com) from 2015 encapsulates the mixture of nature and artifice that the project embodies.
