# The Photographers of La Raza Newspaper Bring to Light the Chicano Movement

Published between 1967 and ’77, the Los Angeles-based bilingual newspaper and magazine *La Raza* provided a vital voice for Mexican Americans and the emerging [Chicano Movement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicano%5FMovement?ref=hyperallergic.com). As part of the Getty’s multi-venue initiative focused on Latino and Latin American art, [PST: LA/LA](http://www.pacificstandardtime.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com), the Autry Museum recently opened [an exhibition featuring over 200 photographs](https://theautry.org/exhibitions/la-raza?ref=hyperallergic.com) from the archives of *La Raza*. These images capture a multi-faceted portrait of Southern California’s Mexican American community, documenting not only everyday life and culture, but also pivotal milestones of activism, including [La Marcha de la Reconquista](http://www.notesfromaztlan.com/2014/05/03/la-marcha-de-la-reconquista-may-5-1971/?ref=hyperallergic.com), the [Chicano Moratorium](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicano%5FMoratorium?ref=hyperallergic.com), and the [struggle for farm workers’ rights](http://www.npr.org/2016/08/02/488428577/cesar-chavez-the-life-behind-a-legacy-of-farm-labor-rights?ref=hyperallergic.com).

This Sunday, the [Autry is holding a panel discussion](https://theautry.org/events/lectures-and-workshops/seminar-photographers-la-raza?ref=hyperallergic.com) with three photographers featured in the exhibition. [Devra Weber](http://www.history.ucr.edu/People/Faculty/Weber/index.html?ref=hyperallergic.com), Raul Ruiz, and Joe Razo will talk about their role in covering this turbulent era, and the important part that *La Raza* played in offering a different perspective than that put forth by mainstream publications.
