[The Shed](https://theshed.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com), a new visual and performing arts center currently being built in the rapidly developing neighborhood, announced last Tuesday that 52 New York-based emerging artists and collectives have been commissioned to create new work for its inaugural [Open Call program](https://theshed.org/commission/open-call/?ref=hyperallergic.com). The $500 million complex is set to open to the public in 2019, with eight floors and almost 200,000 square feet. The Open Call program is co-organized by senior curator Emma Enderby and chief civic program officer Tamara McCaw. The program will offer each artist a stipend of between $7,000 and $15,000, depending on the scope of their project, alongside the promise of additional institutional support and other resources for development. The plan is for these projects, once completed, to be presented in the Shed’s black-box theater and open-air plaza beginning in late spring 2019. Over 900 artists from across all five boroughs submitted proposals for Open Call. The review panels for these included artists, cultural programmers, and academics from a variety of backgrounds, according to the program’s website. “We launched Open Call with the intent of creating a meaningful opportunity for emerging artists to make new work,” McCaw said in [a statement](https://www.artforum.com/news/new-york-s-the-shed-commissions-fifty-two-artists-to-create-work-in-2019-77040?ref=hyperallergic.com). “A fundamental part of our mission is to engage our local communities and support New York City’s diversity of talent.
