Artist Devra Freelander was tragically killed on July 1 after being struck by a cement truck while cycling in Brooklyn, New York. Freelander was a founding member of the artist collective MATERIAL GIRLS and a recipient of the 2016 St. Botolph Club Foundation Emerging Artist Award. In 2017, her work was mentioned in Hyperallergic’s list of the year’s [top 15 Brooklyn art shows](https://hyperallergic.com/417850/best-of-2017-our-top-15-brooklyn-art-shows/). At a [**Sotheby’s**](https://news.artnet.com/market/lewis-chess-piece-auction-result-1591561?ref=hyperallergic.com) sale on July 2, one of the famous Lewis Chessmen pieces sold for £735,000 (\~$927,423) — 55 years after it was first purchased for £5 (\~$6). It was recently found hidden in a desk drawer belonging to a family in Edinburgh. Carved out of walrus ivory, the chess pieces were first discovered in 1831 on the Scottish Isle of Lewis, though their exact origins are unknown.

In partnership with **Creative New Zealand,** the **Bishop Museum Library & Archives** has launched a residency in Hawaiʻi for Māori artists or practitioners called the Wānanga|Wānana Research Residency.
