Modest Mussorgsky wrote *Pictures at an Exhibition* as a memorial to his late friend, the painter Viktor Hartmann, in 1874\. Still reeling from Hartmann’s death the year before, the Russian composer takes his listeners on a gallery tour of ten of Hartmann’s paintings, drawing, and sketches, pausing in front of each to offer his impressions before moving on to the next by way of a stately promenade. While Hartmann’s paintings do not survive, *Pictures at an Exhibition* has become one of the most celebrated pieces in the classical music repertoire, a fittingly colorful, occasionally stormy tribute to Hartmann’s art.

The [LA Phil](https://www.laphil.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com) will bring Ravel’s orchestral arrangement of Mussorgsky’s *Pictures* to life this February at Walt Disney Concert Hall, coupling it with the world premiere of Nico Muhly’s *Register* for organ and orchestra.
