The table was created and used by artist Poul Gernes as a dining table, while the Arne Jacobsen chairs were painted these colors after the company asked Gernes to select them. The chairs were included in Gernes’s exhibition at the Danish Pavilion in the 1988 Venice Biennale. MIAMI BEACH — At Art Basel Miami Beach, the city’s biggest contemporary art trade show, the accoutrements of galleries are as significant as the works on display because they contribute to the frame through which we see these wares. Each gallery booth is designed to communicate with a potential buyer and present a specific face to the world. One of the most overlooked aspects of the fair booth is the functional furniture used by dealers and their staff. Chairs and tables are wherefive, six, and seven-figuredeals are made. They are the props arranged on a stage awaiting their wealthy actors. They are the plumes of exotic art birds engaged in a mating ritual that takes place beside a constant stream of people passing by.
