Through his scholarly and curatorial work, Arnett aimed to amend the conventional history of artmaking in the United States to center the significance of formally untrained Black artists.

Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander is assistant curator of American Art at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University. She received her Ph.D. in art history from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2018 and currently lives in San Francisco.
