Most parents aren’t too happy with the idea of their children becoming artists. The career path is almost invariably associated with no money and starvation — unless, that is, you’re one of the few selling your art for millions. But there are in fact several artists out there making a decent living by selling their art, whether out of their studios or through galleries. This process might seem mystifying or inaccessible to some, which is why the Feminist Art Project (TFAP) NYC and SOHO20 Gallery are organizing a workshop dedicated exclusively to the topic of “Selling Your Art” on Wednesday, June 20.

“Selling Your Art” is the sixth installment in SOHO20’s Getting Basic series, which aims “to help women artists and artists of marginalized gender identities navigate the practical side of their studio practice.” Past workshops include “How to Talk to the Press” and “How to Write an Artist’s Statement,” and this week participants will “speak candidly about selling art and the etiquette that surrounds it.”

A number of the workshop’s speakers have worn many hats in the art world, and therefore have some robust advice to give. You’ll hear from Jackie Battenfield, a former gallery director and author of The Artist’s Guide: How to Make a Living Doing What You Love (2009), which offers tips to artists on how to promote their work, manage finances, and strengthen their portfolios. You’ll also get the perspective of a gallery owner and art dealer, Kat Griefen, and a visual artist, Dana James, who can now boast that she is “painting full time.” (James has also had gallery experience, having founded Elgin Gallery in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.) The conversation will be moderated by visual artist Jenn Dierdorf, former Executive Director of SOHO20 Gallery and a current coordinator for the Feminist Art Project.

When: Wednesday, June 20, 7–9pm
Where: SOHO20 Gallery (56 Bogart Street, Bushwick, Brooklyn)
