For the first time in its 62-year history, the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art will present a survey of artists living and working in Connecticut. Today, Tuesday, January 13, the institution named the 40 participating artists in the inaugural Aldrich Decennial.

The exhibition, Aldrich Decennial: I Am What Is Around Me, which is expected to recur once every decade, will open on June 7 and run until January 10, 2027. A complete list of artists is included at the end of this article.

Drawing upon the state's history as a home to artists including Alexander Calder and Sol LeWitt, the show will focus on works created within the prior decade by artists who have never had a solo museum exhibition in the state. New Haven-based painter Dominic Chambers, Iranian-born multi-media artist Arghavan Khosravi, and novelist and poet Renee Gladman are among the inaugural cohort. The title is derived from the 1917 poem “Theory" by Wallace Stevens, who was a longtime resident of Hartford, Connecticut. The poem evokes identity as formed by one's context.

“Connecticut has always been a site for visionary artists and daring ideas,” Chief Curator Amy Smith-Stewart said in a press release. “This survey spotlights artists who call this place home — artists whose work is deeply rooted in the Museum’s community yet resonates far beyond it. It’s an honor to share their powerful voices with the world through this new exhibition series.”
