In the past few years, a cultural renaissance has flourished in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, with restaurants, music venues, parks, and art spaces popping up all around the area. The influx of new visitors to the city center has led to the need for improved directional signage for greater connectivity between Birmingham’s cultural districts, historic landmarks, and businesses.
An initiative between the Birmingham Museum of Art, REV Birmingham, and the City of Birmingham seeks proposals from artists living and working in the Southeast to develop original work to be incorporated into creative wayfinding signs for downtown Birmingham.
In phase one of the project, a panel will select a single artist to generate a concept and prototype for a large-scale sculpture that will serve as an artistic gateway entrance to Birmingham. Phase two will include the participation of additional artists and full implementation of the wayfinding system.
The call is open to artists living and working in the Southeast, and proposals are due by July 31, 2015.
Eligibility
This call is open to all artists and artist collectives over the age of 18 who currently reside in the Southeast. No 501c3 nonprofit organizations or religious institutions may apply.
Budget
Artist(s) will receive up to $25,000 to produce a prototype, which includes: artist’s stipend and travel, project materials, construction, and delivery of work of art to Birmingham.
