Joy Sperling has published several monographs, and many articles and book chapters on the art practiced and artists who practice(d) in the contested spaces of culture from the 19th to the 21st centuries. She has written on popular patronage, the place of marginalized artists in the art world, on the contested place of women artists, sculpture, photography and illustration and is currently writing a book on the ways in which modernism(s) need to be reconceptualized to address the multivocality of art and visual culture production using interwar regional women artists as a case study. She is Professor and Chair of Art History and Visual Culture at Denison University.
