Over 24 million travelers came to Japan in 2016 to experience the country’s unique mix of past, present, and future. Now known as an attractive (and not too expensive) destination for traditional and modern culture, bringing in a new brand of visitor to explore Japan’s art, design, and architecture is the next challenge.
JAPAN 99+1: Traveling through art, design, and architecture is a newly released print and companion website of some of Japan’s best spots for the traveler looking beyond the typical tourist areas. Curated by an international group of artists, designers, and tourism experts, the book and accompanying website has been published by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) as a way to reach a new generation of travelers seeking to add something beyond what the average first or second time visitors experience.
From open-air art festivals to backstreet boutiques and cafés, JAPAN 99+1 uncovers locations across the art and design spectrum, as well as regional and cultural context to help travel planners create itineraries within a region or area of interest.
Although the print edition of the book is limited in number, and being distributed through select travel coordinators around the world, the digital pdf version is free to download (no registration required), and all of the content (plus a bit more) is available on the project’s website, art.japan.travel, for anyone interested in exploring Japan’s art and design treasures.
