We know what you’re thinking. “Law school for artists? Hyperallergic, you crazy.” If (according to Aristotle), “Law is reason, free from passion,” than art and law aren’t exactly soul mates. Yet legal issues are an important thing for artists to be aware of, especially when it comes to navigating the complicated terrain of intellectual property and art world bureaucracy.
Enter the Law School for Visual Artists, a five-week lecture series hosted by the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts to help artists protects themselves and their artwork. Topics covered will include intellectual property, contracts, licensing agreements, employment issues with galley and studio assistants, issues in public art and more. All courses will be taught by VLA assistant director Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, who is well-versed in the field of art law and is also an artist himself.
Lectures will take place on October 5, 12, 19, 26 and November 2, 2011. The series is free and open to visual artists only. To apply for a spot email your answer to Are you a visual artists?
