Nevada Museum of Art Presents the 2026 Art + Environment Summit: Under Pressure
This three-day gathering features Kim Stanley Robinson, Jeffrey Gibson, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Rose B. Simpson, and many more. April 16–18, 2026.
As we experience an accelerating and changing climate, the Nevada Museum of Art is holding a three-day summit in Reno, Nevada, to collectively envision a future where new generations and diverse life forms are supported and protected.
The 2026 Art + Environment Summit: Under Pressure is presented alongside the major museum-wide exhibition, Into the Time Horizon, and convenes prominent artists, writers, Indigenous leaders, designers, and interdisciplinary thinkers to consider one of the most urgent questions of our time: how to realize a sustainable future.
At the Summit, Kim Stanley Robinson, Rose B. Simpson, Cannupa Hanska Luger, and the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) will present “Proposals for the Future,” original solutions for building regenerative and resilient societies. In addition, Jeffrey Gibson will lead a conversation on Indigenous Futures with Judith Lowry and Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun. Johanna Burton will moderate a discussion with Andrea Bowers, Carolina Caycedo, and Clarissa Tossin on eco-feminist legacies as LaToya Ruby Frazier joins Makeda Best in conversation about her work, Katie Paterson conducts her performance “To Burn, Forest, Fire,” Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner reads her poetry, and Dr. Bernie Krauss presents his “biophonic” soundscapes. Furthermore, Haley Mellin, Kai Anderson, Stacey Montooth, Oscar Tuazon, and Delaine Spilsbury will discuss land conservation.

“The Summit has a rich history, resulting in important outcomes,” said David B. Walker, CEO of the Nevada Museum of Art. “It catalyzed the production of Ugo Rondinone’s internationally renowned installation Seven Magic Mountains in Las Vegas; Trevor Paglen’s Orbital Reflector satellite, which launched into orbit; Rem Koolhaas’ research at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center; and one of Helen and Newton Harrison’s final works, Sierra Nevada: An Adaptation.”
Additional presenters include: Margaret Levi, Brittany Nicole Cox, Apsara DiQuinzio, Ginger Dunnill, Herman Fillmore, William L. Fox, Jonathon Keats, Rebecca Lendl, Jack Malotte, Maia Nuku, Madison Olandt, Laura Ortman, Katie Paterson, Eric-Paul Riege, Colin M. Robertson, David B. Walker, and Ann M. Wolfe.
The Summit is activated by original performance, movement, and sound works by Ginger Dunnill, Madison Olandt, Eric-Paul Riege, and Laura Ortman.
“This event gathers some of the most prominent creatives of our generation to explore everything from the preservation of natural ecologies to Indigenous wisdom,” added Apsara DiQuinzio, Nevada Museum of Art chief curator and Summit organizer. “We are honored to host this monumental dialogue and exchange of ideas that offers concrete solutions and hope for our planet’s future.”
