Pacific Northwest College of Art Hosts an Online Symposium on Mutual Aid and Community Care
On November 20 and 21, Forms of Care: Building the Worlds We Need will explore the intersections of art, design, technology, critical race theory, disability studies, and activism.
Forms of Care: Building the Worlds We Need is a fully online two-day symposium featuring participants from Portland, Oregon and beyond, showcasing the creativity and resilience of our communities. It will take place on November 20 and 21, 2020.
The panels, lectures, and workshops respond to issues of accessibility, support, and mutual aid, promoting interdependence and networks of care outside of the state and nonprofit industrial complex.
Through visual art, design, poetry, scholarship, and activism we focus on survival, support, collective access, building worlds beyond scarcity and individualism, and reimagining sustainability as fundamentally collective.
Forms of Care rejects austerity and emphasizes dreaming the worlds we need into the present. Events include:
- Keynote lecture by disability scholar Aimi Hamraie, Critical Design Lab
- Keynote lecture by Teressa Raiford, founder of Don’t Shoot PDX
- Workshop by Ari Melenciano, founder of Afrotectopia
- Readings by Cedar Sigo and Jayy Dodd
- Panel on Mutual Aid and Community Care
- An online art exhibition
Keynotes will be ASL-interpreted and captions will be provided for all events.
