Ruby City Presents "Generative Disruption: Feminist Art from the Collection"

Generative Disruption: Feminist Art from the Collection, opening September 26 at Ruby City, recognizes the contributions of women artists to contemporary art and explores how feminist artistic practices have expanded the possibilities of what art can be, whose stories it can tell, and whose experiences are represented.
Beginning particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, feminist artists challenged assumptions about whose experiences were worthy of representation, what subjects could be addressed through art, and what materials, forms, and approaches could constitute artistic practice. Their contributions fundamentally expanded contemporary art, creating new possibilities for generations of artists that followed.
For Ruby City, Generative Disruption is an opportunity to recognize this history while looking at how its influence continues to shape contemporary artistic practice today. The exhibition reflects a collection built around the belief that diverse perspectives enrich our understanding of art and the world.
Throughout the exhibition, Ruby City will present related programs spanning film, music, conversations, workshops, and more. Exploring themes of feminism, identity, belonging and place, magic and ritual, objects and meaning, and reclaiming narratives, these programs invite visitors to engage with the ideas of the exhibition and with the possibilities of contemporary art itself. Featured artists include Laura Aguilar, Sama Alshaibi, Nao Bustamante, Alex de León, Annette Lawrence, Tala Madani, Tracey Moffatt, and Carrie Mae Weems, among others.
Ruby City is a free contemporary art center in San Antonio, TX, grounded in founder Linda Pace’s belief that contemporary art inspires connection, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of the world. Her vision was rooted in a simple desire: to share art with others.
Before her death in 2007, Pace envisioned Ruby City as a place where art would be accessible to everyone. Today, that vision is realized through a dynamic campus dedicated to exhibitions, programs, and the free experience of contemporary art.
At the heart of the Linda Pace Foundation’s mission is the belief that contemporary art is essential to a dynamic society. Generative Disruption reflects that commitment by bringing together artists whose work draws from lived experience to consider the body, identity, space, power, gender, belonging, and personal experience.
