PARIS — The crepuscular imbroglio at work in Jean Tinguely’s historic machine sculptures, currently on view at Galerie Georges-Philippe et Nathalie Vallois, is very much of the present moment.
As you may have seen on the internet today, an American exchange student “just wanted to take a funny picture” and ended up stuck inside artist Fernando de la Jara’s “Chacán-Pi” (Making Love) sculpture, located on the grounds of the Institute of Microbiology at Tübingen University in Germany.
Memories fade. That’s the one good reason, as far as I can see, to compile an end-of-year list. It’s sometimes startling to retrace what attracted my attention over the course of a year; it is also instructive to determine where such a miscellany of shows fits in with ongoing areas of interest, and which ones, in hindsight, merited the time it took to review them.
Few people may know the names of Shunk-Kender, but the pair of photographers behind that hyphenated moniker have captured many of the most famous images of post-war modern and contemporary art in Paris and New York and together they documented many ephemeral events that would’ve been lost to history if it were not for their work.
Peter Selz — prolific curator, art historian, and an instrumental figure in the scholarship on modern art — hardly bears introduction.
Radio Waves: New York “Nouveau Réalisme” and Rauschenberg at Sperone Westwater is a long-overdue exhibition revolving around the enigmatic Swiss artist Jean Tinguely.
