Is it truly public space if there’s no opportunity to really disrupt things? Artist Sebastian Errazuriz doesn’t seem to think so.
SANTIAGO, Chile — The name of the first urban intervention festival in Santiago de Chile, “Hecho en Casa” (“Homemade”), simply comes from the mission of the activities: the aspiration to create a festival for people in downtown Santiago, to make them feel that the streets are their home.
In the Armory Modern section of this year’s Armory Art Fair, a work by Chilean artist Sebastian Errazuriz has taken the typography of wording of Occupy Wall Street signs and printed them as black lettering onto pristine white folding chairs. The effect was immediately disturbing but the artist’s explanation is more complex and intriguing.
