Founded in 1876, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) has a mission and reputation for providing an interdisciplinary, self-directed education supported by a faculty of dedicated, practicing artists, mentors, and advisors. Live, study and work in the heart of America’s legendary college town, home to over 60 colleges and more than 250,000 college students.

SMFA’s range of degree and certificate programs offers students the flexibility to create their own path of study, experiment and evolve as artists. There are no majors — students work across 13 studio areas, including drawing, printmaking, digital media, and more. SMFA offers something for everyone, from the all-studio based Diploma Program, to the BFA, MFA, or even the Post-Baccalaureate Program.

SMFA is one of only two art schools in the country affiliated with a major museum — the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), and also has a long tradition of training successful artists — Edmund Tarbell, Ellsworth Kelly, Lois Mailou Jones, and Nan Goldin. A SMFA education allows alumni to go on to a range of successful, creative careers: university teaching, fashion, as creative directors and designers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, gallery owners, and much more.

SMFA’s educational approach will challenge and push limits and our graduates emerge as self-confident individuals with unique skills and interests, supported by the fearless curiosity that fosters groundbreaking ideas, conversations, and art.
