On Saturday, January 19, people around the world took to the streets for the third annual Women’s March. Crowds were much smaller than in years past — perhaps because of stormy weather, resistance fatigue, critiques of the event’s perceived gender essentialism, or controversy surrounding the organizers of the march, some of whom face allegations of anti-Semitism.
Still, the thousands of marchers who did show up brought along some strong protest signs, showing support for feminism, reproductive rights, income equality, and other progressive causes. Running themes included Marie Kondo “tidying up” the White House Cabinet, celebrations of the unprecedented number of women recently elected to Congress, and quotes from Cardi B’s government shutdown speech.
