These Are the Artists in the 2027 New Museum Triennial
The show will feature 36 artists and collectives representing 34 nations, making it the most internationally focused edition to date.
After a five-year pause, the New Museum in Manhattan will open its sixth triennial for emerging artists in its newly expanded building on February 4, 2027. Titled The Outside Expands, the triennial will feature 36 artists and collectives representing 34 nations, making it the most internationally focused edition to date. A complete list of participants is included at the end of this article.
New Museum Curator Vivian Crockett co-organized The Outside Expands with Isabella Rjeille, a curator at Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) in Brazil. The pair was inspired by “X Galeria (X Gallery)” (1979), an urban intervention staged by the Brazilian collective 3NÓS3 during the United States-backed civil-military dictatorship that gripped the nation for over 20 years.
Members of the collective duct-taped large X's on the entrances of various galleries in São Paulo, and accompanied them with the following message: “O que está dentro fica, o que está fora se expande” (“What is inside remains, what is outside expands”). During the period of profound repression and human rights violations, 3NÓS3 called on Brazil's artists and scholars to practice beyond institutional frameworks — a demand that's becoming increasingly relevant today.
