Whitney Museum to Host 50th Anniversary Symposium for its Independent Study Program
This Friday and Saturday, the Whitney Museum will host the Independent Study Program's 50th Anniversary Symposium, with panels and talks featuring former students and visiting faculty.

This Friday, October 19 through Saturday, October 21, the Whitney Museum of American Art will hold it’s Independent Study Program 50th Anniversary Symposium. The Independent Study Program (ISP) began in 1968 and consists of a Studio Program, a Curatorial Program, and a Critical Studies Program.
To celebrate their 50th year, the ISP will host an array of artists, curators, and scholars from past ISP classes, along with visiting faculty. Friday’s events begin at 11 am with a panel on “(Re)constructing Histories.” Other Friday panels include Institution and its Discontents as well as Pedagogy and Critical Practice. In between, there will be talks by Hal Foster and Johanna Burton. Friday’s events conclude at 8 pm, and on Saturday, the symposium runs from 12:00 to 6:30 pm, with two panels, Media and Its Apparatuses and Activism and Critique. There will also be lectures by Jennifer Gonzalez and Sharon Hayes.
The event is free and open to the public, though registration is required. You can register for the Friday and Saturday events separately through the following link. This is sure to be an enriching two-day event, so it’s definitely worth attending. For those who are unable to attend, the symposium will also be live streamed on YouTube.
