New Tumblr Looks at Art in the Process of Installation

LOS ANGELES — There’s only one thing I love more than art installations. And that’s watching an art installation come together. This past year, I had the pleasure to work on a number of complex art installations and learned so much about the works, their structure, the artists’ thinking. Every art lover should have this opportunity.
Wrapit-tapeit-walkit-placeit is one of my new favorite tumblelogs. As implied by its URL,installator.tumblr.com, wrapit-tapeit is a group tumblelog of installations coming together. We can watch Jim Hodges’ boulders coming together at the Walker (“and my they’re shiny” declares the blog), and a quiet moment of the Mona Lisa on its way back to the Louvre after World War II.
The tumblelog succeeds in its simplicity, offering a quick glimpse at the complexities of art installations, which are a triumph of project management and the understanding of materials. And with more pieces, like Michael Heizer’s “Levitated Mass,” incorporating the installation as the part of the art work, the tumblelog offers a lovely look at how artists (and their hard working teams) bring their work to life.
