Gowanus Open Studios (GOS) returns for its 23rd year with a record number of participants. Over 400 artists and venues in the Gowanus neighborhood (and slightly beyond) will open their doors, giving the public a rare glimpse inside the former factories, warehouses, and studio buildings of this vibrant neighborhood. Artists will be on hand to discuss their work, share their processes, and showcase their latest projects. Select businesses in the area will also be offering discounts.
The event is organized by Arts Gowanus, a non-profit working to support, promote, and advocate for local artists. “In a neighborhood as rapidly changing as Gowanus, Open Studios is a great opportunity for the creative community to come together and make our presence felt,” says Johnny Thornton, Arts Gowanus Program Director.
Visitors to GOS 2019 are welcome to explore the studios in any order. Those unsure where to begin may want to start with some of the neighborhood’s biggest studio buildings, each of which boasts dozens of participating artists. From any of these buildings, visitors will be in a good position to stop by smaller studios. Suggested tours have also been curated by renowned curators and art world professionals, found here at ‘GOS2019 Self-Guided Tours.’
An online directory and map offer background on artists and a walking guide to the neighborhood. Printed maps will be available at various locations, and signs and balloons will identify each open studio building.
