New York City is extending its free government-issued ID card program through 2016, which will continue to provide residents with a number of city-wide benefits, including access to libraries, entertainment discounts, and year-long free memberships to dozens of its cultural institutions. Starting next year, the IDNYC card, introduced just last January, will also offer carriers a list of new benefits. Before Mayor Bill de Blasio made the announcement yesterday, those eligible and interested in the program would have had just until December 31 to sign up for a card.

The list of 33 participating cultural institutions will soon bump up to 40. Here are the seven new partners:

  • BRIC Arts | Media
  • The Metropolitan Opera
  • The Museum of Chinese in America
  • The Museum of Modern Art
  • The New Museum
  • Pregones Theater
  • Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

Each institution offers its own unique perks, which you may browse in one spot online. The membership terms for the seven listed above will be announced in January, with the institutions themselves setting the terms.

To apply, one has to prove residency and be over the age of 14, and appointments may be made at an enrollment center. In addition to the 29 centers — up from 12 in January — located across the five boroughs, pop-up ones will also rotate through city locations, with schedules updated monthly available on an interactive map. This year, over 670,000 New Yorkers enrolled in the program; even Pope Francis owns one.
