An Amazing Look at Pieter Bruegel the Elder's "The Harvesters"

This great video tells the very detailed history of Bruegel's August/September masterpiece, "The Harvesters" (1565).

The Harvesters” (1565) is one of six panels painted by Pieter Bruegel the Elder for the suburban Antwerp home of the wealthy merchant Niclaes Jongelinck, and this extraordinary work was remarkable in its era not only for the quality of its depiction but also because it went beyond the stereotypical views of the seasons that were typical of the period. The painting continues to enthral visitors with its seemingly infinite amount of details and hidden stories.

I recently came across this video produced by Canal-Educatif in France, and available on Google Art Project, about the work that is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It does a fine job of delving into the plethora of detail and meaning in this wondrous painting and making sense of it all. Enjoy.
