As the sun was setting on Saturday, the hills of salt outside the run-down factory buildings at Lumen 2012 looked otherworldly. The one-night video and performance art festival was staged in the vacant spaces of the old Atlantic Salt Company on Staten Island, where 150,000 tons of salt that had gone unused during the curiously warm winter were transformed into performance pedestals and projection sites.

Yo, Brooklyn Night Bazaar Starts Thurs Dec 15
We’re very excited to be part of the Brooklyn Night Bazaar that starts tomorrow night in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and continues until Saturday (5pm to midnight). The large-scale night market in a 40,000 sq ft warehouse on Kent Avenue, between N5th and N6th Streets, will include over a hundred art, food, craft, merchandise and artisanal vendors of all kinds. The venue will also host concerts in a very trippy interior designed by hot Euro-designers JDS/Julien de Smeldt Architects. And Hyperallergic will be there!

Monster Madness on Beat Night
Picture it: a skeleton with a keen eye for color paints a Zombie-pin-up-girl with severe angular outlines against a cartoonish background. What is it? It’s Ryan Ford’s “Humanary Stew” (2011) at Factory Fresh, and it proclaims the talent of the undead. This comic scene is the perfect introduction to some intriguing new work on view in Bushwick this month.

Thoughts & Photos from the 2011 Maximum Perception Performance Festival
Liveblogging performance art is a little like tweeting a dentist appointment. You go in with some anxiety about the experience, and in the case of the former, you wonder how you will be able to capture all of what you are experiencing but also remain in the moment and engaged even though your mind can wander, distracted by noises, conversations, your own thoughts, and interruptions. When you’re liveblogging you can’t look away, not even if the performer cuts their hand (happened last time and she needed 20 stitches), or pulls out a hypodermic to inject some clear liquid into their cheek (happened this time, thanks Zhennesse). It is an imperfect thing, liveblogging, but I will say it is an exhilarating way to experience performance art.

Friday Night Gallery Crawl: Postmasters, Flux Factory, Janet Kurnatowski, Storefront, Grace Exh. Space
It was Friday, April 2, and my mission was five gallery openings in one night: Postmasters in Chelsea, Flux Factory in Long Island City, Janet Kurnatowski in Greenpoint, and two Bushwick venues, Storefront Gallery and Grace Exhibition Space. It was an ambitious list to accomplish but my goal was set.
