The Armory Show in One Sentence
This year's edition seemed awfully quiet and downcast, making the financial sector trade show on the floor below seem like a riot in comparison.
I wish I could tell you that the Armory Show this year was radically different or better than recent editions at the Javits Center in Manhattan, but it was the same melange of dreadful hotel-lobby art next to countless inoffensive works that “explore identity and memory” with only a slim minority of memorable standouts, many of which were in the Focus section, dedicated to art from the Caribbean and curated by the phenomenal María Elena Ortiz of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and although people were wheeling and dealing as usual, the fair seemed awfully quiet and downcast, making the financial sector trade show on the floor below — same thing minus the art — seem like a riot in comparison.
