The IRL Land Where Cats Rule

The Japanese island of Tashiro (田代島) is where the feline things are.

The Japanese island of Tashiro (田代島) is where the feline things are. The small island is inhabited by 100 people, almost all seniors, and many many cats.

According to Tofugu, a blog that specialized in all things Japanese, the prevalence of cats, and cat-inspired surroundings (buildings, shrine … ) is a wacky publicity/tourism/recruiting stunt by people desperate for new blood:

The modern people of this island are hoping that they can use the cats (coupled with a decent amount of media attention they’ve been getting) to attract people to visit, then eventually live there. If they don’t, then I’m afraid the island will look like a scene from Jurasic Park 2: Lost World, minus the dinosaurs with a few thousand cats thrown in.

So, in honor of tonight’s Internet Cat Video Festival presented by the Walker Art Center at the Minneapolis State Fair, here is the land that goes meow.

Btw, you can watch a livestream of the Internet Cat Video Festival on Animal Planet.
