Eli Petel's (Eliyahu Fatal) First US Solo Exhibition Opens at the American Jewish University in LA

Curated by Leah Abir and Rotem Rozental, Broken Cisterns will be on view from August 26 to November 12.

Fatal - Broken Cisterns
Eli Petel (Eliyahu Fatal), “Airplane”.

Broken Cisterns is the first US solo exhibition by Fatal (Eli Petel), one of the most significant artists working in Israel today.

Shown across both of American Jewish University’s campuses (Bel Air and Simi Valley), the exhibition examines ideas of transportation of objects and bodies and the ways in which institutions, geographic movement, and physical and mental leaps facilitate this. It also reflects the artist’s incessant interest in the identity formations and cultural shifts that result, manifested in the artist’s choice to exhibit for the first time under the name Eliyahu Fatal – Fatal being his family’s original Iraqi-Jewish name before its encounter with the Zionist project.

The exhibition is curated by Leah Abir and Rotem Rozental, and is on view from August 26 to November 12, 2018, at the Familian and Brandeis-Bardin campuses of American Jewish University in California. Opening reception will be held on August 26, 5–7 pm.
