A still from Buhm Hong’s “Empty Place” (2019), currently featured in Picture Time at Tiger Strikes Asteroid NY
As many art museums and cultural institutions remain shuttered in an effort to mitigate against the spread of COVID-19, it feels important to figure out other ways of engaging with art and artists. While some institutions have begun offering virtual tours, opportunities for artists to engage with the public directly remain equally critical.
This Saturday, March 21, Tiger Strikes Asteroid — a non-profit network of independent, artist-run exhibition spaces with locations in New York, Philadelphia, LA, Chicago, and Greenville, SC — will be launching its second edition of #AskTigerStrikesAsteroid, a new series of Q&As with artists, via its Instagram. Each Saturday at 12pm EST, users can visit the page of the Bushwick location to view an artwork currently on display and ask the featured artist questions about the work or their practice. As Director Alex Paik explains, “We think this will be a great way for our audience to connect with the artists in a new and exciting way, not to mention being a fun way to pass the time as we hole up for this crisis.”
Last weekend’s edition focused on Kakyoung Lee’s single-channel animation “Smoke Series -2” (2019), and this weekend will focus on a one-minute excerpt (as per Instagram’s moving image cap) of Buhm Hong’s “Empty Place.” A former designer whose drawings, videos, and installations, Hong’s work grapples with memory and place. Both artists came to New York as international students from Korea, and have work on view in TSA’s ongoing exhibition Picture Time (now only open by appointment).
Busy this Saturday at noon? No stress. #AskTigerStrikesAsteroid will continue on a weekly basis, and Instagram users will be able to access the full archive here.
Stay safe (and engaged) at home!
